Over 175,000 city residents have supported the initiative to celebrate Moskva River Day in an online referendum on the Active Citizen website.
The holiday will be marked on 19 July. The organisers plan to make Moskva River Day a massive annual festival and a major summer tourist event in the city.
The programme for this year includes trips on sightseeing boats, embankment festivities, a cruise ship exhibition at the North Riverside Station and a ship parade in the city centre. A cycle race along embankments may also be held as part of the festivities.
In addition, 4,374 city residents submitted their proposals for Moskva River Day celebration.
The bulk of proposals were from Internet users between the ages of 25 and 34 residing in the Southern, Southeastern, Southwestern and Western administrative areas.
In particular, one of the most popular ideas was to spend a day cleaning the river and adjacent areas from rubbish. Other proposals included environmental performances, trips to archaeological monuments, events such as wakeboarding, windsurfing and kitesurfing, a yacht regatta, kayak competitions, water scooter competitions, an angling tournament, a river taxi service, illuminated floating platforms, a river carnival, a lighting show and fireworks.
Fifty percent more women than men supported the idea of a new holiday.
At the same time, 28,000 respondents were against this initiative and another 14,000 said that experts should provide advice on how to organise the festivities.
